Thwaite cottage is a charming whitewashed family home dating back to the 1500s, set in a quiet, sunny location on the outskirts of Coniston with seasonal views over the lake towards Grizedale Forest, the village and Coniston Old Man.

The extensive grounds were frequently visited by the leading Victorian art critic John Ruskin, who lived across the lake at Brantwood and who wrote about the enclosed garden. There are over two lovely acres of both soft landscaped and wildly roaming gardens at the front, side and rear, ideal for socialising or gentle contemplation. There are numerous specimen trees, shrubs and bushes throughout, and the bluebells are a riot of colour in spring.

The traditional Lakeland entrance porch, ideal for coats and boots, leads to a collection of inviting rooms, each with its own historic features. The lovely and airy sitting room has a large fully working fireplace, antique alcove cupboards, panelling, a window seat, period fire surround and shuttered windows. You can eat and entertain in either the super country-style kitchen or the adjoining dining room. All the rooms have decorative beams.

Upstairs there are wonderful bedrooms, most with window seats, and a sunroom/studio to escape to, with its own TV and a panoramic view over the fields to the lake.

The cottage is large enough for family gatherings yet cosy enough for two.

The cottage can be found tucked away along a flat private drive shared with adjoining National Trust properties. Whilst its location is away from the hustle and bustle of Coniston, the village’s pubs, restaurants and shops are within easy walking distance. There is parking space for numerous cars.

*psst: In 2014 the ITV drama 'Safe House' was filmed in the property behind Thwaite Cottage and the gardens of Thwaite Cottage were used during some scenes!
