- Traditional Lakeland cottage
- Perfect for families
- Walking distance of village & lake
Within the quiet hamlet of Haws Bank just south of Coniston, yet within easy walking distance of the village, lake, pubs and footpaths to the fells. Sunny Brae Cottage was built in the 19th century, on the site of The Penny Ale House used by the community of workers from Coniston Hall. These days, if you fancy a drink, you'll have to visit the local inn, The Ship, just up the road. And sadly the beer is no longer a penny!
There's an ornate porch, handy for muddy boots and outdoor gear, that welcomes and leads you into the living room. Leather sofas surround the wood-burning stove and the big sash window looks over to the garden opposite. The large kitchen can easily accommodate five diners, and has all the mod cons you'll need. The window seat will provide a distraction and somewhere to sit and daydream - let the dishwasher do the washing up! A wide stairwell leads up, past a large sash window through which the sun pours, to the landing. Here a family up to five members can sleep comfortably, and each room with its own en-suite facilities. Even the single room has its own shower room.
Outside across the quiet lane is a cottage garden. Enclosed, with mature planting, lawn and a decked area with barbecue, this is a beautiful secluded sanctuary, allowing guests somewhere to relax and enjoy the views of fells and mountains.

My parents and I spent seven nights at Sunny Brae Cottage in Haws Bank, Coniston. Quite simply a wonderful, charming house with suitable commodities and lovely views. It has a living room, fully equipped kitchen, three bedrooms (single bed, twins, and double bed), and each have a bathroom with showers (one of which is a spa). The cottage does have a log fire, wi-fi, free parking, and is open to pets but strictly on the ground floor. There is also a garden across the road. The cottage is clean, tidy, and well-cared for by the owners and there are instructions on how to use the cottage's facilities and offering advice on potential places to walk in Coniston and Cumbria. Just down the road from the cottage is Coniston Water, offering boat rides around the lake. There are some great walks around Coniston, particularly up the local mountain Old Man of Coniston. Coniston is a rustic, charming village with a number of good places to eat including the Ship Inn, The Black Bull, and Cafe Meadowdore which has a wonderful breakfast menu. It is advised to wear walking boots when out for walks, and to be cautious when driving around Cumbria's winding roads. On a slight negative side, the cottage's water pump can be quite noisy when the showers are being used, but there are instructions on how to switch it off if necessary. I highly recommend this cottage to anyone, and I would very much like to visit it again.

We hired the cottage for a reunion of university friends. It was clean, cosy and well equipped. Nice to have the en suites and the lovely wood burner. The location was excellent, being walking distance to the village of Coniston and the water. We didn't use the car all weekend, instead taking boats across the water to explore the surroundings. The local pub, three minutes walk away does good food and the Bluebird cafe by the boat jetties, was great for morning refreshments.

Lovely homely feel to cottage, had everything to make our stay comfortable. Enjoyed many walks including Old Man via Dow crag. Also completed the tree tops Go Ape at Grizedale, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting at Rookin Hole near Ullswater and went ghyll scrambling at Stickle Ghyll and waterfall in the Langdales. We saw the Ospray at Esthwaite- well worth a visit. best food and welcome came from the Ship Inn but we also enjoyed the Yewdale in Consiton. Good take away from Our Plaice and Sara's Indian.

Great cottage with everything we needed, Christmas Tree was a lovely touch. Log burner and WiFi were an added bonus. Walked up Old Man of Coniston from the Village. It was snowy and icey and came down via Goats Water which was a good choice, less icey and easier underfoot. Beautiful walk to Tarn Hows- well worth a visit.

L.E, Oct 2014
A well equipped cottage in a quiet and friendly hamlet just outside from Coniston. The cottage is delightfully situated at the top of a single track road leading to the Lake and camp site. The cottage is as well equipped and as comfortable as any home. The kitchen had everything required to self cater comfortably for a family of four and a dog. Linens and towels were provided and of good quality, beds comfortable and everywhere clean and fresh. Logs were provided for the log burner and the central heating was to use as we chose. The garden to the cottage is directly opposite the house over the lane and made for a nice spot to enjoy the evening sunshine. Parking for two cars opposite. The walk to Coniston is via a pleasant and well laid path along the lake. The Fells - Old Man/Swirl How et al are walkable from the Cottage. The pub is within walking distance and a small shop on the camp site by the Lake provides for basic commodities and fresh eggs. We would definitely return to this cottage.
